Halloween is a Saturday this year. Towns set their own trick-or-treat hours and street closures change year to year, so check your town or neighborhood association before you head out.
There’s no single start time around Boston, and each town or neighborhood does Halloween its own way, so look up the times for any specific event you’re planning on. Sunset comes before 6 p.m. in late October, and it stays dusky until a little after 6. Most families are out between about 5:30 and 8 p.m., which is the sweet spot for trick-or-treating.
Try the South End's Titus Sparrow Park party (4–5 p.m., parade at 5), Hyannis Main Street's car-free trick-or-treat (4–6 p.m.), or Malden Center's business trick-or-treat on Friday, October 30 (3–5 p.m.).
Main Street events like Hyannis close the road to cars, and suburban sidewalks in Newton are easy going. On Beacon Hill, skip cobblestoned Acorn Street with a stroller.
Salem expects more than half a million visitors during its month-long Haunted Happenings, so Halloween night is very crowded. Many families with little ones visit on an October weekday instead.
